Dr. Ewart F. Brown, a graduate of Howard University,
was sworn in as Deputy Premier of Bermuda on
July 30, 2003.
In an historic General Election
on July 24, 2003, Dr. Brown was re-elected to
the House of Parliament in District 26 – Warwick
South Central. In winning a second consecutive
term in government, the Bermuda Progressive
Labour Party (PLP) grabbed twenty-two of the
thirty-six parliamentary seats and Dr. Brown
once again proved that he was the man to represent
the district which first elected him in 1993.
In fact, Dr. Brown trounced his opponent almost
two to one.
Three days after the General
Election, Dr. Brown was elevated to the position
of Deputy Premier of Bermuda and Deputy Party
Leader by acclamation at a Special Delegates
Conference on Sunday, July 27, 2003.
Dr. Brown was reappointed
to the Cabinet by Premier Alex Scott and again
is responsible for the Ministry of Transport.
During the PLP’s first term in Government, Dr.
Brown was responsible for introducing fast ferries
to Bermuda. Although a controversial move in
the beginning, Bermudians and tourists alike
have made commuting by fast ferry extremely
popular in the island.
Dr. Brown has vowed that as
a Member of Parliament and Deputy Premier, he
will continue to be committed to a strong and
balanced economy, new airline routes to Bermuda,
affordable housing for Bermudians, meeting the
needs of the elderly, and engaging youth in
